Time for another dram!

Today we are heading to the tropical coast of Goa, India, for a pour of Paul John Bold—a fully peated Indian single malt that shows how well smoke and high-humidity maturation can work together.

What is Paul John Bold? (Distillery & Cask Details)

Crafted by John Distilleries in Goa, Paul John has built a solid worldwide reputation for its non-chill filtered single malts made from indigenous Indian six-row barley. Because Goa's tropical climate accelerates maturation (with angel's share reaching around 8% to 10% per year), spirits extract bold cask influence and mature much faster than in the cooler Scottish Highlands.

For the Bold expression, the barley is kilned using peat imported directly from Islay, dried to around 30–35 ppm, before being distilled in copper pot stills and aged entirely in American oak ex-bourbon casks.

Time to try it!

Poured into the glass, it has a lovely natural copper-gold colour. The peat presents itself immediately, but with a vibrant freshness rather than a heavy, medicinal Scottish bog character.

The Nose

Peaty and fresh upfront, layered with dry cut grass, sweet herbal liquorice, and crisp slices of tart green apple.

The Palate

The mouthfeel is quite light and approachable on entry. The peat carries through neatly alongside toasted oak, cracked wood spice, and a sharp, refreshing squeeze of lime and lime zest that cuts right through the smoke.

The Finish

A lively, warming peppery finish that lingers with lingering smoke, more green apple peel, and a clean, dry mineral edge.

Price, Value & Final Verdict: Is Paul John Bold Worth It?

Paul John Bold is an exceptionally well-put-together peated dram that offers something distinct from your standard Islay bottles. The tropical ageing gives it maturity beyond its years while keeping the spirit crisp and vibrant.

• The Pros: Non-chill filtered at a solid 46% ABV, natural colour, and priced fairly at under £50. The interplay between green apple, lime, and crisp peat smoke makes it dangerously drinkable.

• The Cons: The palate texture is on the lighter side, so if you're expecting the thick, oily, tarry weight of an Ardbeg or Laphroaig, this might feel leaner than anticipated.

If you are a fan of peated whisky looking to expand into world whiskies, or you want an approachable, smoky highball base that holds up to soda and ice, Paul John Bold is well worth picking up.
