Lochlea Our Barley - Whisky Review

Lochlea Our Barley Single Malt: Whisky Review & Tasting Notes
Time for another dram!
Today we are heading down into the rolling countryside of Ayrshire in the Scottish Lowlands for a distillery rooted directly in the soil: Lochlea Distillery.
Operating from a working farm where Scotland’s national bard Robert Burns lived and worked in his formative years, Lochlea takes pride in field-to-bottle provenance, growing their own barley right on site.
While their experimental limited releases highlight the changing agricultural seasons, Lochlea Our Barley serves as the distillery’s flagship core single malt.
The sample I poured came via a Drinks by the Dram bottle (likely discovered in a Christmas advent calendar, though regardless of how it arrived on the shelf, good whisky is good whisky!).
Bottled at a proper 46% ABV, it presents a fresh, grain-forward profile that immediately stands out for how approachable and gentle it feels in the glass.
Here is my honest breakdown, complete tasting notes, and final verdict on Lochlea Our Barley.

What is Lochlea Our Barley? (Distillery & Cask Details)
Lochlea is an independent farm distillery that began distilling in 2018 under the vision of Neil McGeoch, later joined by former Laphroaig distillery manager John Campbell to refine the core liquid.
Rather than sourcing grain from industrial malting facilities, Our Barley is crafted from 100% estate-grown barley harvested directly from the fields surrounding the stills.
To build complexity without burying that natural cereal spirit, the whisky is matured in a three-cask recipe: first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry casks, and shaved-toasted-recharred (STR) wine barriques.

Lochlea Our Barley Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes
Time to try it!
Poured into the tasting glass, it shows a clean, natural pale gold colour. The first impression is how gentle and refined the nose presents itself—there is zero harsh ethanol prickle, making it easy to approach right away.
The Nose
Very delicate and inviting. It opens with clean cereal grain and fresh malty sweetness, followed by soft vanilla pods and a gentle touch of buttery toffee. A subtle, airy floral character weaves through the background, keeping the profile light, crisp, and fresh without feeling weighed down by heavy wood.
The Palate
The light, elegant character carries straight over onto the tongue. It offers a very soft, delicate mouthfeel with just a slight touch of sweetness up front. The floral notes expand nicely on the palate, mingling with fresh grist, sweet cream, and gentle malt aromas. Alongside that cereal sweetness comes a lovely, subtle nutty touch of raw almonds that gives the light body extra texture. It is remarkably pleasant and easy-drinking—sitting at 46% ABV, it carries zero alcohol heat or aggressive burn, drinking more like an exceptionally gentle 40% dram while retaining its natural body.
The Finish
A pleasant medium finish. It stays clean and consistent, carrying that delicate almond nuttiness through to the end alongside lingering sweet barley and faint floral blossoms. Towards the very end, a subtle touch of dry toasted oak emerges, rounding off the dram nicely without introducing any bitterness or astringency.
The Verdict: Keep the Water Away!
I did not add a drop of water to this dram, and to be honest, you shouldn't either.
At 46% ABV, it already has the perfect balance straight from the bottle. Adding water would only risk washing out the delicate floral notes, the nutty almond hints, and that light sweetness that make this whisky so charming. It is balanced, unpretentious, and drinks wonderfully neat.
Final Verdict: Is Lochlea Our Barley Worth It?
Lochlea Our Barley is a genuinely lovely, pleasant pour.
It does not try to overwhelm you with massive peat smoke or heavy, sticky sherry oak; instead, it puts its farm-grown grain front and centre. It is the definition of an easy-sipping, refreshing single malt that you can enjoy on any casual afternoon—though its bright, floral, malty, and gently nutty profile makes it especially well-suited for sipping in spring and summer.
If you are looking for an accessible everyday Lowland dram that highlights clean malt craft, gentle almonds, and soft oak without burning your throat, Our Barley delivers great quality.
