Glen Orchy 5 - Whisky Review

Time for another dram!

A Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, product of Lidl GB

Glen Orchy 5 - Whisky Review

A bit about

The information from the bottle is pretty slim - 40% ABV, blended in oak casks, blended and bottled in Scotland, and it won Silver in 2020 at the Scotch Whisky Masters - The Spirits Business.

Unlike Ben Bracken, (another of Lidl's whiskies), which is just a brand name, Glen Orchy is an actual glen (valley) in the Argyll and Bute region of Scotland, following the river Orchy.

Time to try it

Nose: Quite fresh and fruity - mainly green apples and pears with a bit of toffee and some grassy tones

Palate: The grassy tones continue on the palate, with a bit of the fresh fruit and some malt, overall quite light

Finish: Very short finish, slightly sharp on the palate towards the end.

Pros and Cons

Somewhere between light and medium-bodied, with an ABV which feels somewhat higher than what it is, I'm not entirely sure what to think about this one. I've not gone back to sample any from the Ben Bracken range in a while, but as far as I remember, I'm pretty sure I prefer the Highland version slightly more than the Glen Orchy.

It's good for cooking and baking, so far it's been pretty successful in the whisky cookies and I'm pretty sure you can make a few tasty cocktails with it.

In Conclusion

I don't have anything necessarily bad to say about this one, but nothing fantastic either. I guess for the £15.99 I paid for it in Lidl, I shouldn't be surprised. I've certainly had way worse whiskies and certainly way worse blends so far, so I can't complaint too much, but you're probably better off buying a bottle of Ben Bracken if you really must buy some form of whisky from Lidl.
