Talisker Storm Single Malt: Whisky Review & Tasting Notes

Time for another dram!

Today we are heading to the rugged shores of the Isle of Skye for one of Scotland's most recognisable coastal distilleries: Talisker. Perched along the windswept waters of Loch Harport, the distillery is famous for its signature marriage of maritime brine, peppery warmth, and coastal peat smoke.

While the 10-Year-Old remains their historic flagship anchor, Talisker Storm was crafted to amplify those wild coastal characteristics. Matured across a selection of refill and rejuvenated American oak casks to dial up the wood spice and smoky depth, it sits at Talisker's traditional signature strength of 45.8% ABV.

Here is my honest breakdown, complete tasting notes, and final verdict on whether Talisker Storm belongs in your drinks cabinet.

What is Talisker Storm? (Distillery & Cask Details)

Founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill at Carbost, Talisker stands as the oldest operating distillery on the Isle of Skye. The distillery’s distinctive spirit profile is shaped by U-shaped wash stills and traditional worm tubs, delivering a heavy, sulfur-free spirit with plenty of character.

Talisker Storm is a non-age-statement (NAS) core expression. To achieve its punchy maritime profile, the distillery vatting combines refill casks with specially selected rejuvenated toasted oak casks, giving the peat smoke a slightly darker, toastier edge than the standard 10-Year-Old.

Talisker Storm Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes

Time to try it!

Poured into a Glencairn glass, it displays a bright amber-gold colour. As with all things Talisker, you know immediately what neighbourhood you are in the moment you bring the rim to your nose.

The Nose

Very faithful to the distillery style. It opens nice and lightly peated right from the start—delivering clean, aromatic smoke rather than an overwhelming medicinal blast. Running underneath the coastal campfire smoke is a very, very delicate hint of fresh citrus peel. It stays clean, balanced, and approachable without any aggressive alcohol sting on the nose.

The Palate

The first sip hits with a bit more intensity than the gentle nose suggests. The arrival is slightly harsher on the initial sip than expected, bringing a sharp prickle of youthful alcohol heat and peppery bite across the tongue. Once the initial heat settles, the flavours open up nicely: more maritime peat smoke rolls in, accompanied by crisp citrus oils, creamy vanilla, and a soft, delicate undercurrent of malt sweetness that balances out the smoke.

The Finish

A pleasant medium-to-long finish. The peat smoke doesn't vanish—it lingers steadily across the palate, carrying that signature coastal campfire warmth right to the end. As the smoke slowly fades, a distinctive touch of maritime salinity emerges, leaving a clean, salty sea-spray tingle on the lips.

The Verdict: Neat or a Splash of Water?

Because the first sip carries a slightly sharp arrival, giving the glass five minutes to breathe makes a noticeable difference.

If that initial heat feels a touch too prickly, adding just three or four drops of water works wonders. Water softens the sharp edge of the arrival, draws out a bit more of the vanilla sweetness, and allows that lingering salty finish to shine through without fighting the alcohol heat.

Final Verdict: Is Talisker Storm Worth It?

Talisker Storm delivers an honest, classic island dram.

While the initial sip is a little sharper and less rounded than the older age-stated 10-Year-Old, it delivers exactly what it promises on the label: a stormy, energetic burst of maritime smoke, bright citrus, and coastal sea salt.

Sitting in the accessible sub-£45 price bracket, it serves as a very solid everyday peated sipper—especially for brisk autumn and winter evenings when you want coastal peat and a warming, salty finish in your glass.
