Spey 12 Brume Doree - Whisky Review

Time for another dram!

A Speyside Single Malt Whisky finished in Brume Doree French Virgin Oak Casks

A bit about

This Limited Edition from Speyside Distillery is a Cask Strength release at 57.6% ABV.

For this one, they opted for quite a long fermentation (120 hours) and a slow distillation.

Brume Doree, meaning 'Golden Mist', refers to the oak toasting process involving a water mist and moderate fire to achieve deep layers of flavour.

Time to try it!

Nose: Sweet, quite rich, with vanilla fudge and some gingerbread

Palate: Completely different to the nose, with copious amounts of oak, tobacco, and tea tannins. Quite harsh on the palate, especially if sampled neat

Finish: Long, with more oak and dryness

Pros and Cons

I'm not particularly a fan of how different the nose and palate notes are, and it certainly needs at least a few drops of icy cold water to tone down the ABV and some of the dryness.

It's certainly an interesting one to try - I don't think I've tried a whisky finished in this type of French Oak cask before, so I don't have any other point of reference.

In conclusion

If you're looking for a peated whisky, this one is not the one for you, if you're looking for a sweet and mellow whisky to sip, then again, unfortunately, this is not the one. It's quite on the strong side, a bit harsh on the palate, with a mix of aromas not necessarily balanced (for me, at least).

As a style, this one is not my typical go-to whisky, so I might be slightly biased here.
