Penderyn Brecon Beacons Distillery Tour

Brecon Beacons is Penderyn's first distillery. It started distilling in 2000 and had its official opening/whisky launch in 2004. It offers hour-long distillery tours between 10 am and 5 pm.

The Distillery is open from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, with the first tour starting at 10:00 am and the last one at 4:00 pm.

How to get there:

Address: Pontpren, Pontbren Llwyd, Aberdare CF44 0SX, Wales

Driving is the easiest way to get there, but there are a few options if you're using public transport.

From Cardiff (Cardiff Central train station), you can take the train (Transport for Wales) to Aberdare (15 stops, 1h 5 min), from there walk for about 5 minutes to Aberdare Bus Station and take Bus no 8 (Glynneath) to Penderyn Garage (32 stops, 30 min) which stops a few steps away from the distillery.

If travelling from Newport, first you have to take the train to Cardiff Central (12 min non-stop), after which you can follow the steps above (around 2h 15 min in total)

After my visit to Penderyn Llandudno Lloyd Street Distillery, I had to go and check out the first of their distilleries, with the original Faraday Still (a unique single copper-pot whisky still).

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the tour starts, giving yourself sufficient time to review all the information from the small display area. There, you can read quite a bit of info about Penderyn's history, the Brecon Beacons National Park and Welsh Whisky.

From there, the tour starts, and you get to see everything else that makes the distillery run.

Production is shut down on the weekends, so it's a bit cooler inside and definitely quieter to visit. Once the tour is over, if you're not driving, you get to sample some of Penderyn's delicious whiskies.

Photography/filming is not allowed during the tour, but it is permitted in the tasting area at the end and the display area at the beginning.

The staff were highly knowledgeable and friendly, and were kind enough to answer the million questions I had (Thank you again, Andrew and Carla).

The tour was honestly great. Whether you're highly passionate or just curious about whisky or spirits in general, I would recommend you give their tour a try.

As you exit the tasting area, you'll find a gift shop with a few more of their whiskies on display as well as for sale. You can also find gins, whisky glasses, gift packs and more.

Overall, allow yourself at least an hour and a half for being there 10 minutes early, taking the tour, and potentially spend some extra time in the gift shop.

If you want to try any of their whiskies, you can find them by clicking here.
