Fuji Single Grain - Whiskey Review

Time for another dram!

A Japanese Single Grain Whisky, made by Fuji Gotemba Distillery.

A bit about

Made with water and snowmelt from Mount Fuji, the Fuji Single Grain Japanese Whiskey was launched in the US in 2021 and in the UK in 2023.

It has 46 ABV, and it is made with maize, rye and malted barley for which the distillery uses three distillation methods - column still, kettle still, and doubler (Just to clarify, in case any confusion arises - Single Grain means made by a single distillery using grain, not that only one type of grain is being used)

Time to try it!

Nose: Banana peel, rye spice, vanilla ice cream and pound cake.

Palate: Fruity and sweet - with red berries (raspberries and redcurrants) and fresh orange slice

Finish: Medium - length, with lingering sweetness and a touch of spicy

Pros and Cons

Probably my favourite out of the three (Fuji Single Malt and Fuji Single Blended).

The spicy notes from the rye are beautifully layered with the sweetness and fruity aromas.

For me, this one is a lovely whiskey to sip, exactly as it is, neat.

If you're not a fan of rye whiskey and its spicy aromas, you might not agree with me about how lovely this whiskey is.

It's also pretty mellow and pleasant on the palate, so if you prefer your drams with a bit more 'meat' and bottled at cask strength, again, you might disagree with me.

In Conclusion

I think it's a lovely little dram to sip neat, no matter the weather, either with food as it is versatile enough to pair with a multitude of dishes, after food - as a little dessert/treat, or on its own, just because it's so pleasant.

Priced at around £65 on most UK websites, it is certainly different to most other Japanese Whiskeys you will find on the market.
