Brother's Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review

Time for another dram!

Celebrity-backed spirits often get an immediate dose of scepticism from drinkers, and usually with good reason. Half the time, famous names just slap their faces onto generic stock liquid to turn a quick profit.

Brother’s Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey was launched by actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley (best known for The Vampire Diaries). Rather than going for a standard, sweet, entry-level bourbon profile, they opted for an atypical four-grain mash bill with a noticeable rye punch.

Distilled in Indiana and aged for a minimum of four years in charred virgin American oak, this straight bourbon is bottled at an accessible 40% ABV.

I poured a 30 ml sample to break down the grain specs, see how those four grains behave on the palate, and share my tasting impressions.

The Four-Grain Mash Bill & Production

A quick look at the recipe behind the bottle:

  • The 4-Grain Blend: To be called bourbon, US law demands at least 51% corn, but Brother's Bond uses a 65% corn base balanced by a generous 22% rye, alongside wheat and malted barley making up the final 13%.

  • Custom Charring: Matured for a minimum of 4 years in new American white oak barrels featuring a heavy #4 char on the barrel staves and a #2 char on the barrel heads.

  • Accessible Strength: Bottled at 40% ABV, keeping it approachable for newcomers and casual sippers.

Tasting Notes

Time to try it!

Poured into the glass, it shows a bright, natural gold colour.

The Nose

The second this hits the glass, the rye makes itself known immediately. If you have a sensitive nose for grains, that 22% rye jumps straight out before anything else.

Once that initial peppery grain settles, you pick up classic bourbon markers: sweet caramel, soft vanilla, and a touch of dry oak in the background. It is clean and welcoming, with the rye giving it a sharp, spicy edge.

The Palate

Taking a sip, the profile takes an unexpected turn. While the nose led with bright rye spice, the palate dials back the grain and introduces a dry, bitter edge.

Instead of a big hit of sweet corn and vanilla syrup, you get notes resembling dark chocolate and roasted cacao nibs, alongside a prickle of baking spice. It noticeably lacks sweetness—if you are pouring bourbon hoping for rich, sticky toffee or brown sugar, it feels a bit missing here. It is easy enough to sip at 40% ABV, but it leans dry and savoury.

The Finish

The finish is short to medium and very straightforward. The dryness holds on, leaving behind toasted oak, a touch of burnt caramel, and a distinct burnt aftertaste that lingers slightly on the tongue.

Final Verdict

Brother’s Bond Straight Bourbon is an interesting pour, even if it won't be everyone's everyday favourite.

At 40% ABV, it is undeniably an easy-drinking bourbon that goes down without any harsh alcohol burn, making it approachable for casual drinking or mixing into cocktails. That high-rye mash bill gives it an appealing, aromatic nose, but the palate could really do with more natural sweetness to balance out the dark cacao nib bitterness and that burnt caramel edge on the finish.

It isn't a bad whiskey, but it is somewhat unusual for an entry-level celebrity pour. If you are curious about four-grain bourbons or want something on the drier, spicier side of the shelf, it is worth a taste to see where your palate lands.
