Attending a whisky festival should be the ultimate way to train your palate, explore emerging distilleries, and meet the distillers and ambassadors shaping the industry.

Over the past few years, I’ve experienced spirits festivals from both sides of the table: as an eager enthusiast with a tasting glass in hand, and representing brands behind the counter pouring drams. Experiencing both perspectives quickly teaches you what makes a show genuinely world-class—and what makes one an overpriced, rushed disappointment.

If you’re deciding which festivals deserve your ticket money, here is my honest, first-hand breakdown of the biggest and best events across the UK and Europe, along with the formats to watch out for.

Whisky Live Paris (The Undisputed Best in the World)

If you can only travel for one spirits event anywhere, make it Whisky Live Paris.

• The Timing & Venue: Held every September inside the magnificent Grande Halle de la Villette in northeastern Paris.

• The Atmosphere: The venue changes everything. Because the 19th-century cast-iron hall is vast, high-ceilinged, and naturally lit, it never feels suffocating or chaotic, even with thousands of visitors.

• The Experience: Beyond an unmatched Scotch and world whisky selection, your pass includes dedicated exhibition halls for rum and sake. You can step outside into the courtyard to grab lunch from food vendors, get fresh air, and head straight back inside without feeling trapped. It sets the benchmark for how a global drinks show should be run.

The Whisky Event London (The Best Luxury Whisky Event in the UK)

For high-end pours and sheer hospitality within the UK, The Whisky Event is unrivalled.

• The Timing & Venue: Held annually in central London at The Royal Lancaster Hotel (near Hyde Park).

• The Format & Value: While tickets sit at the premium end, the value proposition is exceptional. Instead of just pouring young core ranges, tables feature 20, 30, and 40-year-old single malts and single-cask archive bottles that are virtually impossible to sample elsewhere.

• The Food: They provide an incredible full gourmet buffet included in the experience, letting you pace yourself properly across an afternoon without burning out your palate.

Expanding Horizons: European & Regional Highlights

Whisky Live Hamburg (Germany)

I attended the inaugural Hamburg edition representing a brand on the exhibitor side. While smaller than its Parisian sibling, it proved to be a well-organized, smooth European show with an appreciative, engaged audience. Watching Whisky Live expand into Germany is a great sign for European enthusiasts.

Seven Hills Whisky Festival (Sheffield)

A hidden gem for UK regional festivals, hosted at The Steamworks in Sheffield. It’s an intimate, industrial-chic setting packed with lovely exhibitors, smooth organisation, and genuine passion. If you want a festival where you can actually chat with brand founders without jostling through crowds, Seven Hills delivers every time.

Brighton Whisky Week

Organised with great care, Brighton Whisky Week made a fantastic impression. The organisers picked a sensible, open space that allowed crowds to move naturally between tables. It proved that regional coastal festivals can rival London events when the space matches visitor numbers.

The Disappointments: What Organisers Get Wrong

Not every festival hits the mark. Venue layouts and restrictive scheduling can ruin even the most promising tasting lineup.

Whisky Live London (A Massive Step Down)

Given the prestige of Paris and Hamburg, Whisky Live London this year was a massive disappointment. Barely any exhibitors turned up, the hall felt empty, and the energy was completely flat. When compared directly to the vibrancy of its sister events in Europe, it’s hard to recommend until organisers seriously revamp it.

Croydon Whisky Festival (Stanley Arts)

Hosted inside Stanley Arts, Croydon Whisky Festival fell flat for me primarily because of the venue layout and format:

• Chopped-up Rooms: When stands are divided between separate rooms and masterclasses are hidden away down side corridors, you spend half your time feeling disoriented. In fact, by the time I worked through the first room, the second room was an afterthought.

• The 3-Hour Slot Trap - (Not just Croydon Whisky Fest): Like many modern festivals, tickets were split into tight 3-hour windows (e.g. 12:00 PM–3:00 PM). Paying £35–£45+ for three hours sounds okay on paper, but if you take time to greet exhibitors, ask about cask specs, and digest what you're drinking, you might only get through two or three stands before the session closes. Whisky appreciation shouldn’t feel like a high-stress countdown.

Club Oenologique

Two years ago, their tasting event was spectacular—stellar masterclasses, brilliant tables, and strong turnout. Unfortunately, this past year’s edition felt noticeably watered down, with less masterclass lineups and minimal buzz. A festival that relies on high-end appeal has to keep its programming razor-sharp to justify ticket costs.

Don't get me wrong, I still had fun, attended a beautiful masterclass and sampled some good drams, but I can't help but compare the experience with what was presented the previous year.

• The Whisky Show (London): Attending soon behind the table representing a brand. I’m excited to see if their massive reputation holds up from the inside.

• Trade Drinks Expo (29–30 September): An industry-focused trade expo that I'm checking out for emerging drinks trends and UK imports.

• Whisky Fest Romania (Bucharest – 20 & 21 November): Returning to Bucharest for Romania's premier spirits festival to sample Eastern European world malts and rare Scotch imports.  

• Whisky Live Madrid: Currently on my radar for late autumn if the travel dates align.

Practical Tips: How to Survive & Enjoy a Whisky Festival

• Never Attend on an Empty Stomach: Eat a carb-heavy meal before you arrive, and pick festivals that provide on-site food or let you pop out for a bite.

• Hydrate: For every 15ml sample you drink, drink at least half a glass of water. Pacing is the only way your palate survives past hour two.

• Prioritise Your Table Route Early: Don't start at the nearest door. Review the exhibitor map beforehand, head straight to your top-wishlist distilleries while your palate is fresh, and leave casual blends for later.
