Springbank 10 Year Old Fino Cask Matured Review

Time for another dram!

Among single malt distilleries, few hold the cult status of Springbank. Situated on the Kintyre peninsula in Campbeltown—once celebrated as the whisky capital of the world—the distillery remains fiercely independent, handling 100% of its production process on site from traditional floor maltings to final bottling.

I recently got my hands on a sample of a particularly sought-after limited release: the Springbank 10 Year Old Fino Cask Matured. Bottled at 55% ABV, this expression spent time in both ex-bourbon and ex-Fino Sherry Casks.

Fino is a dry, delicate style of sherry, aged biologically under a layer of flor yeast. Bringing that dry, crisp, and yeasty profile together with Springbank’s signature maritime, lightly peated spirit makes for an intriguing pour.

Here is my honest review of how this cask-strength dram drinks neat, what giving it time in the glass does to the profile, and my final verdict.

The Release: Springbank & The Fino Cask Profile

A quick breakdown of this specific limited bottling:

  • Distillery Independence: Springbank is one of the very few Scottish distilleries that still malts 100% of its own barley on traditional stone floors, using light peat smoke before running a unique two-and-a-half-times distillation cycle.

  • The Fino Maturation: While many sherried Springbanks rely on dark, sticky Pedro Ximénez or rich Oloroso casks, this release focused on Fino sherry butts (6 years). Fino brings a pale, dry, saline, and nutty character that lets the distillery's raw spirit DNA shine through without getting smothered in heavy dried fruit.

  • ABV: Bottled at 55% ABV with no chill filtration and natural colour, it delivers the raw weight and oiliness that Campbeltown enthusiasts look for.

Tasting Notes

Time to try it!

A quick tip right from the start: don't rush this pour. It really needs to sit in the glass for a good 10 minutes to breathe. Once it gets that air, the aromas and flavours unlock completely.

The Nose

Poured into the glass, the nose carries that unmistakable, classic Springbank distillery character—slightly oily, coastal, and malty—so you would never mistake it for anything else. At 55% ABV, there is a firm alcoholic presence, but it isn't harsh or aggressive. While the spirit is peated, there is not much detectable peat smoke on the nose.

Once you leave it to rest for 10 minutes, a whole new layer of sweetness opens up. You get soft vanilla and rich, creamy custard, paired with ripe red cherries. Bizarrely enough, there is even a faint, sweet note of gummy cola bottles floating in the background alongside that malty backbone.

The Palate

Taking a sip neat, it is a lovely, surprisingly friendly arrival. The 55% ABV delivers a solid, warming kick, but the alcohol heat is far more integrated and toned down than you might anticipate from a cask-strength dram.

On the tongue, the peat finally reveals itself—gentle, savoury, and perfectly balanced against the dry, nutty crispness of the Fino wood. The sweetness is front and centre: rich malted barley, soft caramel, toffee, and a deep drizzle of maple syrup. As it develops, it brings in warming slices of spiced cinnamon cake and juicy cherries, cut through with a bright dash of fresh lime zest that keeps the palate lively and structured.

The Finish

A solid medium-to-long finish that lingers with intention. The savoury peat, sweet maple syrup, and toffee hang around on the tongue, joined by a subtle hint of cola bottle gummies and a lingering prickle of lime zest that dries out cleanly alongside toasted oak.

Neat vs With Water: How Does It Drink?

Neat, the dram is rich, full-bodied, and deeply satisfying—especially once it has had time to breathe. It certainly does not demand water to be approachable, but adding a few drops makes an interesting difference:

  • With Water: A few drops of water smooth out the initial alcohol punch even further, taking the edge off the heat.

  • The Shift: Dilution tones down some of the heavier toffee and maple sweetness and mellows out the profile. It brings forward brighter orchard fruit—think crisp pear and ripe apricot—while the oak and smoke take a step back.

Both serves are great, but keeping it neat and letting it breathe in the glass allows that spiced cinnamon cake, rich custard, lime zest, and gentle peat to show off their full complexity.

Final Verdict

Springbank 10 Year Old Fino Cask is an exceptional, well-crafted dram. Fino sherry can be tricky to balance—lean too hard into it and a whisky can turn overly dry or sour—but here it simply frames the distillery's natural maltiness, coastal charm, and subtle peat smoke.

It is remarkably pleasant and easy to sip despite the 55% proof. An absolute pleasure in the glass that works brilliantly as an autumn warmer, but honestly, it is the kind of dram you could pour and enjoy at any time of year. Just make sure you give it that essential 10-minute rest in the glass before your first sip.
