Time for another drink!
A 12-Year-Old Dark Rum from Panama

A bit about
As a brand, Ron Abuelo has been around since 1908, when Don Jose Varela built a sugar mill in Pesé, Herrera, in the very recently established Republic of Panama. The first bottle of their rum was produced in 1960.
They use sugar cane, which they both grow and mill, two sets of column stills, and age their product using both the 'Solera' and 'Vintage Palette' systems. While the Solera blends the oldest rums - from 12 to 40 years, the Vintage Palette involves refilling the barrels every two years with rum of the same age.
Launched in 2008, the Anejo 12 Year Old Ron Abuelo has 37,5% ABV. It was aged in American white oak barrels,
It won Gold at the Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition in 2009.

Time to try it!
Nose: Molasses, fruit cake, sweet dried fruit
Palate: Dark brown sugar, lovely on the palate, sweet and creamy, with dates and figs
Finish: Oak and lingering dried dark fruit sweetness (prunes mainly)

Pros and Cons
For me, the Ron Abuelo 12 is highly flavourful, full-bodied and great for sipping. It works wonders over ice and is fabulous in any cocktail I've tried with it.
Priced around £40 on most UK websites, I think it's a great dark rum to sip.
If you're pretty new to the world of rum or need a gift idea for someone who enjoys this kind of spirit, then you can't really go wrong with this one.
