How to get there

Via Public Transport

From Dalmuir train station, it is roughly a 30-minute walk, via the Great Western Road (ignore any other suggestion from maps, as they are on private property and you cannot access the distillery), or a 4-minute bus ride on the 747 from Swindon Street to North Dalnottar Cemetery bus stop (4 stops).

Auchentoshen is a 30-minute drive from Glasgow City Centre.

Address: Great Western Rd, Clydebank G81 4SJ

How is the tour?

So far, I've only taken part in the Original tour, so I can't advise on what others involve, but I can briefly walk you through what to expect.

I arrived there on a random autumn day, and as with most whisky distillery tours, this one started with some information about their history and an overview of the three basic ingredients used for whisky-making: water, barley and yeast, and how exactly Auchentoshan processes/sources them.

After that, we had a brief presentation on their mashing and fermentation processes and their triple distillation, which is done using their three copper pot stills.

We then went to a separate storage/warehouse building where we discussed a bit about different cask types and storage conditions.

After the technical part was over, it was time for the tasting part, where I got to try two of their core range.

Overall, it was ok. I had a million questions, some of which were answered at some point, but overall, unfortunately, I can't say it stood out in any particular way. Maybe it was an off day for the guide or an off day in general for all of us; it just lacked a certain spark which makes the whole experience generally memorable. Everyone was lovely, don't get me wrong; I just don't have anything outstanding to report.

So, is it worth it?

I would still say yes. If you're curious about whisky, it's always worth going straight to the distillery to get more info, sample some of their products and buy some of their distillery-only products, and I'll probably go back soon to see if the experience is any different.
