Glenfiddich Solera 15 - Whisky Review

Time for another dram!

An enjoyable Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A bit about

The making of Glenfiddich Solera 15 is quite interesting: Whiskies matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry American and European Oak Casks are married in large oak Solera vats, which are never emptied.

So far, the Glenfiddich Solera 15 has won several awards since it was launched in 1998, including:

Gold in 2013 and 2017 at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (Scotch Single Malt - Speyside), Double Gold in 2013 (for Single Malt Scotch 13 to 19 Yo) at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold in 2014 and 2015 (for Speyside Single Malt 13 to 18 Yo) at the Scotch Whisky Masters - The Spirits Business and Silver in 2019 at the same competition.

Solera 15 has 40% ABV, and a reddish-golden colour

Time to try it!

Nose: Very subtle on the nose with a pleasant, somewhat flowery sweetness and a hint of plums and blueberries

Palate: Medium body, gentle and smooth/delicate on the palate, with a bit of spice and raisins, not too sweet, finishes a bit gingery

Finish: Melow and medium, oaky with more spice and raisins

Pros and Cons

You can sense the sherry influence in both smell and taste; it's not overpowering, and it's decently balanced with the light sweetness.

It's enjoyable, but for me, it somehow feels like a younger whisky.

In Conclusion

With a medium body and a nice balance of flavours, the Glenfiddich Solera 15 is an overall pleasant and a good day-to-day whisky, but with nothing standing out in particular (for me, at least).

Priced at around £60 on most UK websites, it's certainly an interesting whisky to sample.
