Didier Lemorton Domfront - Calvados Review

Didier Lemorton Domfront 6YO - Calvados Review
Time for something a little different in the glass!
When most people think of Calvados, classic apple brandies from Normandy’s Pays d’Auge usually spring to mind. However, down in the Domfront area, the rules are different—pears take centre stage.
I got hold of this bottle through Norman Soul, a dedicated UK-based platform offering authentic calvados from Normandy. Through their Calvados Society subscription club, members receive a curated quarterly box featuring three distinct regional expressions to explore.
The first edition in the series highlights Didier Lemorton, a celebrated family-run estate where distilling goes back to the 1920s, when Didier’s grandfather, Isidore, began their distillation tradition.
Aged in French oak barrels (many of which previously held cognac), this pour brings a traditional, fruit-forward style to the glass. Here is my honest review of the producer, what it tastes like, and how it drinks.

The Producer: Didier Lemorton & The Domfront Tradition
A quick look at how the Lemorton family crafts their spirit:
High-Stem Trees: They stick with traditional high-stem varieties that produce less fruit overall, but deliver the concentrated quality they want.
Orchard Varieties: Around 80% of what they make comes from pears across roughly 30 estate varieties, led by the prized Plant de Blanc for richness and character.
Patient Fermentation: The fruit juices are pressed and fermented separately, giving the pear cider about six months to develop its aromas slowly.
Single Column Distillation: They run a continuous single-column still to protect the fresh fruit flavours, turning around 100,000 litres of cider into roughly 8,000 litres of spirit.
Oak Maturation: Everything is aged in French oak barrels (often ex-cognac), with the family releasing only vintage or mature bottlings aged at least six years.

Tasting Notes
Time to try it!
The Nose
Right away on the nose, you get a lot of fermented cider aromas—like traditional rustic fermented apples and pears. Once you get your nose properly into the glass, you smell much more of the pears and pear cider. It is pleasant, fruity, and brings a gentle touch of soft vanilla in the background.
The Palate
Neat on the palate, the mouthfeel is very velvety. It is mainly pears, but you also pick up apple flavours, general orchard fruit, and some subtle oak coming through. It is very pleasant and well-balanced.
The Finish
Smooth and gentle, holding onto that soft orchard fruit and a touch of oak without any harsh burn.

Neat vs With Water: How Does It Drink?
The producer notes suggest enjoying it neat with a small drop of water to help the aromas open up.
With a tiny bit of water added, it stays beautiful, floral, and fruity on the nose, and remains lovely on the palate. However, I definitely prefer it neat. Water thins the texture slightly, and because it sits at an approachable 40% ABV rather than high-proof spirit strength, drinking it straight gives you the best mouthfeel and flavour balance.

Final Verdict
Didier Lemorton’s Domfront Calvados is a very pleasant, balanced pour that shows off what pear-forward Normandy distilling is all about. It is clean, fruity, and velvety to sip.
You can pair it with a pear and almond tart or simply enjoy it neat after dinner.
