The Choya Aged 3 Years - Review

Time for another drink!

A delicious Japanese Ume fruit liqueur (Umeshu).

After trying The Choya Single Year and absolutely loving it, I had to try some of the other Choya versions.

A bit about

The Choya Aged 3 Years has 15% ABV and is made with Kishu Nanko Ume fruit.

A 700 ml bottle requires, on averege, 340g of ume fruit.

Regarding awards, The Choya Aged 3 Years won Gold in 2016 and 2017 and Silver in 2018 and 2019 in the 'Stone fruit liqueur' category at the International Spirits Challenge.

Time to try it!

The Choya smells delicious, sweet, honey-like, with ripe ume fruit which make your mouth water (If you're not familiar with ume fruit, it might remind you slightly of unripe plums and apricots).

Quite tart on the palate, but highly flavorful (probably feels a bit more flavorful than the Choya Single Year.)

The long and dry finish is a bit oaky and tart, but overall very pleasant and somehow still fruity.

I've tried this neat, at room temperature, chilled, as well as over ice. I haven't tried any cockatils yet with this one, so can't suggest any good mixers for it.

For me, this Choya is great at room temperature but even more delicious if chilled or poured over ice.

So far I've found the Choya bottled as a 60ml small jar, as part of a tasting/flight pack, a 200 ml glass bottle or a larger, 720 ml glass bottle.

A 720 ml bottle is priced at around £53 on most UK websites. I think it's a great drink to try, especially chilled, on a warm summer day.
