Sawanotsuru Koshujikomi Umeshu

Time for another drink!

A rich and sweet plum wine with aged sake from Sawanotsuru Brewery

A bit about

Made by Sawanotsuru Brewery, one of Japan's and Kobe's many fascinating sake makers, with a history dating back to 1717, Koshujikomi Umeshu has 11% ABV.

Made with Nanko Ume (plums) and sake aged for 3 years, Koshujikomi Umeshu has a beautiful burnished copper colour.

Time to try it

Bursting with fresh, tart ume fruit and pleasant sweetness on the nose, it somehow reminds me of a richer version of the Choya.

From the first sip, it's fruity, quite sweet (reminding me of sultanas), but also has a richness that comes through, thanks to the aged sake, making this delicious for siping.

The finish reminds me both of sake and umeshu - lightly dry, tart but lingering pleasantly on the palate.

Pros and Cons

I've tried this chilled, at room temperature and over ice, and after going through half of the bottle, I'm still not 100% sure how I prefer it - it's delicious no matter what you decide.

For me, it has a nice balance of aromas, it's not overly sweet and has a delightful aftertaste.

It has certainly made it to my list of favourite plum wine (or umeshu-related) drinks.

It paired delightfully with grilled meats and fish, charcuterie and cheese boards and fruit-based desserts.
