Adega do Cantor Winery Tour & Tasting: Visiting the "Winery of the Singer" in the Algarve

When people plan a trip to the Algarve, the itinerary is usually dominated by beaches, coastal boat trips, and seaside towns. But if you want a change of pace from the coastline, heading inland for a vineyard visit is one of the best half-day excursions you can take.

I visited Adega do Cantor (literally the Winery of the Singer, famously co-founded by Sir Cliff Richard) on a warm, sunny afternoon towards the end of April. Tucked in Guia, just northwest of Albufeira, the winery produces wine from grapes grown across three local quintas, with the winery itself based at Quinta do Miradouro.

Here is my honest breakdown of the tour, what the wine tastes like, and practical tips for planning a visit.

Getting There & First Impressions

Getting to Adega do Cantor is straightforward. I took a quick Uber from where I was staying in the Albufeira area—it only cost a couple of euros and dropped me right at the entrance.

If you are using public transport, you can take a local bus out towards AlgarveShopping in Guia. The winery sits about 500 metres directly behind the shopping centre (roughly a 3-minute walk). You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you spot the distinctive green gate marking the entrance to Quinta do Miradouro.

The setting immediately feels a world away from the busy resort strip. It’s quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by open countryside.

The History & The Vineyard Walk

Our guide was Monica, and she was fantastic from the very start—warm, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to without sounding like she was rattling off a memorised script.

She kicked things off at the beginning by walking us through the background of the estate—how the project started, the connection to Sir Cliff Richard, and how the vineyards evolved across the three sites.

From there, we headed outside for a walk through the vines at Quinta do Miradouro. Because it was mid-to-late April, the vines were still in their early waking stage. We didn't have heavy bunches of grapes hanging from the trellises yet, but Monica pointed out the very beginnings of tiny baby grapes forming on the shoots.

She talked us through the grape varieties they cultivate across the estate—both Portuguese staples like Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, alongside international varieties like Syrah and Viognier—and explained how the sunny, breezy Algarve microclimate shapes their growth.

The Winemaking Process & The Barrel Cellar

From the vines, we moved through the production facility. Monica walked us through the entire process step-by-step, explaining how the fruit is handled, sorted, pressed, and fermented. What I appreciated was how open the layout is—you get to see the tanks and production kit right where it all happens rather than behind thick glass screens.

Next, we descended into the cellar.

It is an atmospheric, beautiful space surrounded by resting barrels and bottles, but here is an essential tip: bring a light jumper or layer to throw on. Even on a warm spring or summer day in Portugal, the temperature in the underground cellar drops noticeably, and it can feel quite chilly once you've been standing down there for a few minutes.

The Tasting: Whites, Reds & Espumante

After the walk-through came the main event: the tasting session.

We sampled a generous selection covering their whites, reds, and the espumante (sparkling wine). Across the board, the wines delivered far more complexity and aromatic depth than what you typically encounter on standard restaurant house-wine lists in the Algarve:

• The Whites: Crisp, vibrant, and clean with refreshing citrus aromas, perfect for southern Portuguese weather.

• The Reds: Rich with dark fruit, gentle spice, and balanced tannins that reflect the warm climate without feeling heavy or jammy.

• The Espumante (Sparkling): This was the absolute standout for me. Beautiful persistent bubbles, bright acidity, and lovely bready, fresh-fruit notes.

The wines have genuine character and punch well above their price point. My only regret was travelling light with just a small cabin backpack to head back to the UK—if I had brought checked luggage, I would have stocked up on several bottles of both the reds and the bubbly.

I couldn't leave empty-handed, though. I picked up a bottle of the sparkling wine from the cellar door to enjoy back at my hotel room on my final evening before flying home.

Wrapping Up on the Shop Floor

Once we finished the tasting, we made our way back upstairs to the shop floor. Monica added some extra stories and context, pointing out photos, press clippings, and historical bits and pieces displayed around the room that tied the whole visit together.

There's zero pressure to buy, but the shop carries their full range—including their signature Vida Nova and reserve Onda Nova labels—plus local olive oil and wine accessories.

My Verdict

If you’re looking for a relaxing, well-run day trip away from the beach, Adega do Cantor is well worth the short detour to Guia. It's affordable, informal, and deeply informative—and the wines are genuinely delicious.

Pairing a morning winery tour here with lunch in Guia (famous for its traditional piri-piri chicken) makes for a top-tier Algarve day out.
