Visiting the Great British Car Journey Near Matlock: A Nostalgic Day Out

Derbyshire and the edge of the Peak District are packed with dramatic stone landscapes and historic country houses, but tucked just down the road from Matlock lies a completely different kind of heritage: The Great British Car Journey.

Whether you love vintage engineering or simply appreciate classic styling, this venue houses one of the most remarkably preserved collections of British motoring history anywhere in the country.

What is the Great British Car Journey?

Located at Derwent Works in Ambergate—just a short drive south of Matlock along the A6—this interactive museum celebrates a century of British car production. Rather than only focusing on ultra-exclusive supercars, the collection of over 130 meticulously restored vehicles charts the everyday cars that families actually drove through the decades.

When I visited, it was delightfully peaceful—just me and a couple of other people wandering around—meaning you can take your time admiring the vehicles without feeling rushed by big crowds.

Exploring by the Decade: The Interactive Tablet Tour

One of the best features of the experience is handed to you right at reception: an easy-to-use interactive handheld tablet.

The entire exhibition is arranged chronologically by decade, starting back in the 1930s and moving forward through the post-war era, the colourful 1960s and 70s, and into modern times. As you stroll along the hall, the tablet acts as your personal digital guide:

• Audio Commentary: You can listen to curated audio commentary that sets the scene for each motoring era.

• Behind-the-Scenes Stories: Beside every vehicle, you can use the tablet to dig into the background stories, quirky design choices, and social history of each model.

• Archive Imagery & Period Posters: The device displays historical advertising, original photography, and vintage posters relevant to every chapter.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

• Everything is on the Ground Floor: The entire exhibition space is laid out on a level ground floor, making it easy to walk around at a gentle, unhurried pace.

• The On-Site Café: There is a lovely on-site café serving hot tea, coffee, and light snacks—the ideal pitstop halfway through your visit to sit down and chat about your favourite finds.

• Driving Experiences ("Drive Dad's Car"): For visitors with a full driving licence, the venue offers a separate experience where you can actually take select classic cars for a spin around a private route. While non-drivers can simply skip this to enjoy the exhibits, it is a fun option if you are travelling with someone who wants to get behind the wheel of a vintage runabout.

Make It a Day Trip: Pairing with White Peak Distillery by Train

Because I don't drive, I planned this entire outing as a car-free day trip by rail. It is remarkably easy to do: hop on the train from Derby heading north along the scenic Derwent Valley line toward Matlock, and you can comfortably combine two fantastic Derbyshire stops in a single day.

After spending a couple of hours exploring a century of motoring heritage at the Great British Car Journey, you can easily pair your visit with a tour of White Peak Distillery, home of Wireworks Single Malt Whisky. Housed inside the historic former Johnson & Nephew wire works right along the River Derwent, it is atmospheric, fiercely artisanal, and well worth the visit.
